History
Buick originated as an independent motor car manufacturer, the Buick Motor Company, incorporated on May 19, 1903 by the Scottish-American David Dunbar Buick (who invented the overhead valve engine on which the company's success was based) in Flint, Michigan. In 1904 the struggling company was taken over by James Whiting, who brought in William C. Durant to manage his new acquisition. Buick sold his stock for a small sum upon departure, and died in modest circumstances forty years later.

Durant was a natural, and Buick soon became the largest car maker in America. Using the profits from this, Durant embarked on a series of corporate acquisitions, calling the new mega-corporation General Motors.

The Bugatti Veyron needs no introduction. It’s the car that changed the world in 2005 when VW finally tamed the eight-litre W16 engine pumping out 1001hp and proved the doubters wrong with a landmark of engineering. It’s still as fresh as the day it was born and now it just got better. Because now it comes al fresco.

OK so the removable hard top doesn’t fit in the luggage compartment and there’s a snazzy carbon-fibre umbrella to stick on top of the car when it rains, limiting the car to just 100mph. But that’s going to be just about the only criticism on this page.

Alfa Romeo’s sporty new compact, the Alfa MiTo, will bring a new dimension to the Alfa Romeo range when it goes on sale in the UK from 24 January. Inspired by the Alfa 8C Competizione, the Alfa MiTo is the first sporty compact from the famous Italian marque since the 1970s.

Four of the five available engines are mated to a six speed gearbox. The entry level 95bhp 1.4 16V Turismo will sprint from 0-62mph in a respectable 11.2 seconds and deliver a top speed of 112mph. The turbocharged 155bhp 1.4 Lusso model delivers the type of power normally associated with a significantly larger engine as it accelerates from 0-62mph in 8 seconds, and continues to a top speed of 134mph.

The Daihatsu UFE-III shown at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show is the 3rd model of Daihatsu’s ‘Ultra Fuel Economy’ concepts, the original was shown at the 2001 Tokyo show.

The UFE-III is powered by a diminutive 660 cc Atkinson 3 cylinder engine and two electric motors. Part of the UFE-III’s impressive fuel economy can be traced to the aerodynamic bodywork. The flowing lines give the UFE-III a 0.168 Cd figure. Add this to a 440 kg overall weight and it is a recipe for efficiency.

The interior of the UFE III is set out in a 1+2 configuration, with two small seats crammed in behind the single central drivers seat. The UFE-III is controlled by steer-by-wire technology.

This hybrid minivehicle achieves category-leading fuel economy of 72km/litre (10-15 mode Japanese emission standard, Daihatsu in-house test data).

Toyota officially unveiled the latest version of its slick looking, Euro-centric people mover at the Geneva Motor Show this week. Called the Verso (not to be confused with the Nissan Versa), the three-row, five-door hatchback wears handsome sheetmetal with lines that are definitely “in family” for Toyota. For as much as we like the outside, the instrument panel has Scion disease. Center gauges. Please stop it. That third row also has severely limited legroom, but it’s still a neat trick to fit so many perches within a Corrola-sized footprint, even if some are occasional-use grade. The Verso will likely delight for bopping across the moorland, but you might need to have your legs removed so you’ll fit in back.
